.. We set off down Napton flight. Having visited Bletchley Park with Ken
Kroker on a glorious Saturday, Sunday morning dawned with very heavy
rain. I decided I wouldn't insist on a 9AM start as agreed with Brenda
last night. Once the rain had stopped we cast off from above Adkins lock
at 9:40 having first had a chat with Guy, the new granddad, who was
collecting stuff from Virgo moored in front of Jannock. The only delay
we experienced on Napton flight was having to wait above the bottom lock
as another, previously moored, boat has set off as we exited from the
second lock. Once out the bottom of the flight we refilled the water
tank using the tap nearest the bridge. I am convinced that this tap runs
slower than the one furthest from the bridge.
The Braunston run was punctuated with the usual collision avoidance
measures due to the heavy flow of boats coming towards us. We also had
to slow down past a multitude of moored boats who were enjoying lunch in
the sunny countryside. Before we reached Braunston we met Prairie Crocus
coming the other way and exchanged washed empty containers that had been
used to move various foodstuffs between the boats yesterday.
Once we had joined the Grand Union at Braunston turn, I left Brenda to
bring Jannock on past the marina whilst I walked ahead to the bottom
lock, the boat that had just entered the lock waited for us and so we
shared the whole flight with them. At the third lock, adjacent to the
Admirable Nelson, we were offered assistance from a nice young lad who
was there visiting the locks with his uncle. They helped us up to the
top of the flight before saying farewell and wandering back down again.
I managed to avoid any contact with the single boat we met coming
through Braunston tunnel and we finally moored at Welton Wharf at 3:40,
exactly 6 hours from starting which was the time given by Nick Atty's
canalplanner <http://www2.mihalis.net/canal/cgi-bin/index.cgi> for the
trip.
A Di Blasi car shuffle from Napton saw us heading home just after 6PM.
Soddit Cruise 2006#2 next weekend so watch this space.
