It's one of the most interesting places in London - the bit of the City
directly opposite London Bridge and in the past, because of the strictures
applied by the City fathers, the place Londoners went to let down their
hair. In Southwark were the bear baiting pits, the whore houses (run by the
Bishop of Winchester), and theatres like the Globe and the Rose, and inns
like the Tabard. from which the Canturbury Tales pilgrims departed. The
original Clink prison was there too.
Today it's the site of Borough Market, much loved of Jamie Oliver and other
celebrity foodies (Madonna is a regular visitor); it has London's only
remaining galleried coaching inn, the restored Globe, the new Tate
Modern, the London Dungeon and - the City's best kept secret - the most
splendid cathedral which in any other city in the world would be a major
tourist attraction but which here is just tucked away alongside the
river, largely ignored, somewhat overshadowed by that dreadful modernist
confection put up by Christopher Wren :-)
Just to keep the subject on topic, the replica of Francis Drake's Golden
Hind sits in one of the many Southwark wharves. It's so small for a boat
that's etched itself on the British consciousness - but well worth a visit.
They loaded it up with rocks when it left port, and gradually chucked them
overboard as the booty of Spanish silver became the most expensive ballast
in history.
