Many ISP's news servers have reputations for being flaky.

I have long used individual.net (formerly known as "The Berlin Server")
http://news.individual.net which I would unhesitatingly recommend. It
costs just 10 euros a year and is very reliable. It also filters out
most spam that gets posted to some groups. I like getting something for
nothing and don't pay for much on the internet, but I think that this is
worth it.

There are several free servers available and which I have tried, but
they are not always reliable and, in some cases, you can only read the
messages but not post replies via the server!
