Picture the scene: sloping path above and parallel to canal is populated
by two cyclists. Canal path below is occupied by a fisherman with one of
the longest poles I have seen. Fisherman starts to withdraw pole to
accommodate the approaching boat; the pole goes back over the towpath at
an angle that takes it over the bank behind and directly into the path
of the oncoming cyclists one of whom just sees the pole and manages to
duck just in time as the pole narrowly misses his head. The second
cyclist, startled by his companion's sudden evasive action, just manages
to prevent his bike from careening down the bank towards the fisherman.
Sadly we were too far away to listen to to the subsequent exchange of views.
