It's pretty well impossible to get right in my experience. If you put
things in their historical context, non-experts get confused; if you put
them in their popular place, experts complain.

For example, I've had people complaining they can't find the Caldon
Canal - because I have it as a branch of the T&M, and others pointing
out that the Stourbridge was never part of the BCN and is a canal in its
own right.

I've implemented a system of "aliases" to work round this - the Caldon
and Llangollen are their in their proper place in the hierarchy, but
there are short cuts from the top level to them.

For the route through Nottingham, I compromised and ended up much like
Waterscape. In CanalplanAC it's counted as part of the Trent, but as a
part called "Nottingham Canal" and another called "Beeston Canal". If
ever the through route was restored, or more of the Nottingham Canal
came into use, I might have to reorganise.
