Hi All
Spent this last weekend on a hire boat celebrating my brother-in-law's 40th
birthday. Interesting to view things from the other side again - it is six
years since we last hired a boat. I suppose that it is a fairly random
survey, but we were definitely ignored by some private boaters, and I got
the distinct impression from one that I should have moved over further from
the centre of the channel to get out of his way.
Anyway, the brief details were that we left Clifton Cruisers at Rugby on
Friday afternoon. Headed to the Rugby Tesco, dropped off the crew, and
winded. We were then going to carry on to Hillmorton, but heavens opened
and we decided to stay put.
Next morning, the sun was out as we ascended the Hillmorton three en route
to Braunston. Some heavy showers in evidence in the afternoon, but later
glorious sunshine. Braunston was packed, even mid-afternoon, so I had to
wind at the entrance to the Marina (few people saw my great turn!) and
retrace our steps. Just after the junction, a boat left as we approached
and we were able to sneak in the vacant space. Ate/drank in the Admiral
Nelson (vg Black Sheep).
Sunday morning started sunny and then deteriorated into a thunder storm with
torrential rain. Harnser passed in the middle of this with Brian hiding
behind a large umbrella! We left after lunch when things had improved
somewhat. Not far out of Braunston we let a Rose Narrowboat pass us as they
were right on our tail. One of the bottom locks at Hillmorton is closed at
present so there was a bit of a queue here. Caught up with the in a hurry
Rose Narrowboat! Stopped to fill with water below the lock, but pressure is
very low so it took ages to fill the tank. Tied up at Hillmorton overnight
and then made the short trip back to the hire base this morning.
The other rookie crew members (three of them) appear to be converted to
canals.
