Could you explain why the pawl? I always close paddles and leave the
pawl off to signal the paddle is down - as the amount of projecting rack
varies between locks. If I come to a lock with paddle which should be
down and the pawl on, I take the pawl off and try to see if it will go
down further, unless it is one where the rack is obviously at the end of
its travel.

I'll add my six penn'orth here. In the working days, gates were always left
open & paddles were always 'up' & *everyone* knew that they had to drop paddles
& shut gates when arriving at a lock--the confusion didn't exist 'coz everybody
did the same. For my part, I generally leave a gate open when leaving a lock
[especially when single-handed] unless I spot a following boat, but will always
lower paddles, as I consider it bad manners to leave them.

I'm off tomorrow down the length of the K&A hopefully to
Bristol & back then returning to West London via Oxford, Napton, Braunston,
Leighton Buzzard etc.etc. [but not drinking in "The Three Horseshoes" :-))] .
If you see "Caie Two" [blue with yellow coachline, 57ft long] give me a wave
[but tell me who you are, unlike Baz Juniper who very kindly greeted me on the
Thames & left me wondering who it was!!!] . You'll know if I'm around by the
open lock gates:-))
Unlike most laptoppers [I ain't got one]I shall be going off-mail as the
libraries are few & far between, so if you *do* see me & you want to hurl some
abuse or just say hello then e-mail me direct & , on the rare occasions I get
in front of a screen, I'll pick up the messages.
  Happy boating folks,
  Barry.
