Sorry for the delayed reaction from here, but I've been out of
circulation a little while.

The answer is 3KW. Where there is no rating from the manufacturer
the examiner will base it on 3KW as a reasonable assumption (for
example, Squirrel is 3.6KW). The ventilation calculation formula is
derived from BS5482: Annex B.

All BSS checks associated with carbon monoxide risks are for the
informed choice of the boat owner/skipper. However, it is a matter
of record.

Failing a ventilation or flueing efficiency check may be a material
fact for insurance purposes, so it may be important to refer to
policy details for more advice should this happen. It may also be
wise to take legal advice in respect of implications in regard to
occupier's liabilities.

and carbon dioxide in the morning....!' (Slight paraphrase, but I
thought it might appeal)
S. I understand where your romantic notions are pointing to ;-), but
on the more down to earth side, the USA coast guard and other USA
boating safety organisations
(http://www.uscgboating.org/links/links.htm)have published several
sets of research and advice concerning dangers from 'neighbours'
exhaust fumes. There is also record of diesel engine exhaust related
poisonings from a mine in the USA.

Over here, the BSS has no record* of harm caused by neighbouring int
combustion engines, but we do have three deaths(accidental) in the
past four years caused by 'own' engine exhaust. *NB It doesn't mean
it hasn't happened.

The BSS hopes to secure funding to co-ordinate a project to examine
the occurrence of carbon monoxide in the marine environment. If
successful, we will use the information to better inform boaters,
boat builders and fitters as well as other interested parties. It's
usual after such predictive pieces of information to refer to space
watching... I won't disappoint in that respect.

Rob
Go boating - Stay safe

PS We have no blitz on ventilation.... we have our checks, published
in full detail in the BSS Essential Guide. BSS examiners know they
should apply all appropriate checks consistently and accurately.
However, our quality control measures are regularly reviewed and
improved/changed where necessary.
