An update from the TIAMI crew. I know we’ve been very quiet of late since
returning from our summer cruise.

We’re feeling very cozy tonight. We’ve lit the fire for the first time this
autumn and with the Ecofan running as well we’ve glowing. Typically, as we
decided to light the fire, it’s turned out to be a warm wet mild evening but
it was very chilly last night. So much so that I woke up in the wee small
hours to discover Merlin (our Norwegian Forest Cat who should be equipped
for cold nights) snuggled up on the duvet between my knees. It’s not funny
now he’s nearly 19 months old and already over 6kg. He takes up a lot of
room.

Simon’s been busy these last couple of days getting the Squirrel ready to
go. Last winter we had problems with water running down the chimney from an
unexplained leak in the roof. He took it all apart and discovered a leak
around the hole where the bolts fix the collar to the roof. We had thought
it was a problem with a sealing silicone that wasn’t as heat proof as
advertised. It made a huge mess inside and outside. In the end it was just
water getting where it shouldn’t. All sorted now, totally leak proof and
cleaned up. The external paintwork will have to wait until next spring to
get sorted. The stove and flue inside look very smart in their new blacking
and we have a new double lined chimney. Much more exciting (and meaning more
cosiness inside) is that we now have a very smart and trendy chrome towel
rail/radiator in the bathroom and the pump that helps circulate the hot
water around the system now works again. I’m looking forward to less frosty
moments this winter when having a shower whilst getting ready for work.

All in all it’s been quite an expensive year … New solar panel and charge
regulator, 3 new domestic batteries, hull blacking, hull survey (TIAMI’s
just about 20 years old), new prop shaft, engine mounting repairs, paint
touch up on port side, stove repairs, new rad … and I still haven’t got my
new curtains or carpet. Jobs for next year are all ready lining themselves
up, touch up paint on starboard side, paint bilges, front lockers and front
well deck, service gear box … and maybe finally get some new curtains and
carpet.

On a completely different subject saw Barry Holland on Caie 2 cruise south
past my office at Coppermill this afternoon on his way to the Kennet and
Avon. That’s the last time he’ll be able to shout out to me as he passes my
office as I’m leaving next Wednesday for a new job … in Watford.
