As part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site Discovery
Weekend on October 28th and 29th, the Friends of the Cromford Canal
will once again be undertaking an extensive programme of events in the
Cromford area. As last year, there will be a rope maker on Cromford
Wharf, who will be joined this year by Zita Speight who will be
demonstrating the art of painting traditional roses and castles as
seen in working narrowboat cabins as well as on many modern boats
decorated in the old style.

There will be music to accompany this: Friend Peter Keating will be
coming with his hand-wound street organ to bring us tunes from the
past, fairground style. There will, of course, be the FCC Sales Stand
in attendance, giving visitors the opportunity to get some of our new
Christmas cards, as well as mugs, tea towels, logowear and books.

The main activity will, as last year, be the operation of the
horse-drawn boat "Duchess", which has received attention from FCC and
Leawood Pump working parties to improve the state of the cabin and
roof. On the Saturday, it will be used to transport a nominal one ton
load of coal from Cromford Wharf to the pump: the coal will be loaded
onto a horse-drawn dray and taken into Cromford, before being loaded
on the boat and taken to High Peak Junction. This will be the first
horse-drawn cargo to use the canal since early last century. Timings
for this have yet to be confirmed.

On the Sunday, the boat will operate (but without the coal) and there
will be our second sponsored walk of the year, the "Ambergate Amble"
from Ambergate to Cromford. On both days, there will be pictures of
the Ambergate - Cromford section from our archives on display at
Cromford, so walkers will be able to see what the canal was like in
the past and compare it to today.

I hope to see some of you there!
