The area of a genuine horseboat (or butty) rudder is big enough for it
to be possible to propel the boat (at a slow but useful pace) by
swinging the rudder to and fro - I moved Maria a couple of hundred yards
this way at Uppermill when we were waiting for the horse. The boat was
initially on the non-towpath side, there were boats moored to the
towpath, and a bridge with no towpath underneath so it would probably
have taken as much time to connect, disconnect and re-connect the horse
two or three times.
