A serious accident happened yesterday when two commercial barges were entering the upstream caisson. The open caisson gates suddenly dropped and virtually cut the two barges in half. Investigating the scene today, I would suggest that it will take some considerable time before extensive repairs can be made and the caisson put back into operation. At the moment the other caisson is operable but for how long, considering the problems with the overhead pulleys, is anyones guess.
