Terry You say that you have trickle charged the battery at 14.6V but not how you measured this voltage. The only certain way is to measure it across the battery terminals with a multimeter. If you are measuring the voltage any other way you could have a fault in the wiring which is giving a false indication that the battery is charging.
It is possible that, if the original battery was faulty in manufacture, if you have had a heavy discharge event the battery would behave as you describe. In which case I would take it back and ask for a new one as the battery was obviously not fit for purpose. However a couple of things to check first. Make certain that all the terminals are tight and clean you should always cover them in petroleum grease after tightening. Check the fluid level in the cells (assuming it it is not a sealed for life type battery). On a battery of this age they all should be about the same. Top up if necessary. If one cell has a much lower or higher fluid level than the rest it would suggest there is a fault so back it goes to the supplier if after charging again using a different charger the situation has not improved.
