Finally catching up on this list, I can't let this one slip. In about 1988 I went to an SF convention in Peterborough with Terry Pratchett, Bob Shaw and Ian Banks as guests. I'd not read any Pratchet then, but didn't let that stop me spending a happy hour or so chatting at the bar to him.
