Although I have previously promised to get together with Mike for a beer during his Brum sojourn, unfortunately I can't do Friday. As it turns out, I seem to have more commitments over the festive period than I really wanted. Never mind ... Knowing Mike, I'd guess the real ale pub he's referring to would be the Prince of Wales. In which case I'd be inclined to agree that it's the best closest real ale pub to the canal. However, a (relatively) short stroll across the square and along Colmore Row takes you to the 'Old Joint Stock' opposite the Cathedral. Housed in a large former bank building - now a Fullers pub - it has 5 or 6 of their excellent beers on offer and serves food. Just around the corner on Bennetts Hill is the 'Wellington', which I'd personally consider has the widest selection of real ale in Brum (12 ales constantly changing) but doesn't do food. However, it does allow you to consume your own takeaway food on the premises! http://www.thewellingtonrealale.co.uk/ Good for future reference if nothing else ... -- Regards -- KEVIN MASLIN Waterway Photography Great Bridge West Midlands England http://www.panelbloke.com
