If your computer has been compromised, someone else has complete access to
it. They have access to your email address book and any other files and can
send email from your computer, using your details, just as if you sent it
yourself. This is how a lot of viruses and spam is sent, not from the
perpetrator's own computer but from a number of other people's computers
they have hacked. The owner is probably not aware anything is wrong. They do
this precisely so that the offending emails are indistinguishable from the
computer owners genuine emails.
I understand you use library computers; you are depending on the council IT
dept.s competence in keeping them secure. My local council has difficulty
emptying the bins competently, YMMV.

I appreciate all the above Niall. But you know & I know that *I* really sent
the xmas card, not expecting criticism from any quarter, &, as you can see from
my last posting on the subject, when challenged, the critic backed down from
demonstrating that it was possible to pretend to be someone else. Please
consider this the last word on the subject, I'm sure all the people who *did*
enjoy the card, sent in good faith, are probably tired of reading about it!
  Barry.
