snip the bit I have replied to : No please don't Dorothy!! It's good to know I'm not alone in disliking : the tendency for American usage and spelling to creep into the English : language. Nothing against Americans or the american language at all : but it's not English I could make a very long list of my pet hates but : a couple at the top would be the use of program rather than programme : for anything other than computer programs. The BBC doesn't broadcast : programs, it broadcasts programmes!! Second would be the use of nouns : as verbs as in the yukky expression to "author a book". : : As for the confusion between similar words with entirely different : meanings, don't get me started. : : Oh all right then....... : : Discrete and discreet : Complimentary and complementary : Its all a mater of education and some of us are not educated to the same high standard as other. I have never been able to spell and before the coming of PCs with spell checks I would not write anything for fear or ridicule. This leads to a downward or level spiral. You do not (should we use don't) write so you do not get better . My spelling has improved more over the past 5 years than in the previous 30 because I write things. I am not bothered by people picking me up on my spelling or using wrong words now, but I bet there are a lot of people who are. By the way, you would never read my hand writing -- Brian Ancient Order of Sewer Ants Visit this site and help save our waterways http://www.savethewaterways.org.uk/
