RE: [canals-list] Quay

Possibly interestingly (or not) Christchurch in Dorset at the mouth of the
formerly navigable Avon, has a Quay and an adjacent "Quomp".  There is also
a "Quomp" in Ringwood, also on the formerly navigable stretch. This word has
puzzled me for years; anyone else got one, or got any idea what it means?
The best web reference vaguely suggests swamp, but we have any number of
perfectly good words for that round here.
