They were doing this many years ago. We had a dive ship sitting between
two jackets with the stern deck under the bridge for hours at a time. We
also had a barge dropping stone into a scour hole right beside a platform
again holding position with thrusters controlled by sat nav.
To put in prospective how this technology has developed I can also recall
helping a team to mount a satellite dish and receiver on a platform and
waiting hours to get a 3 position fix as to where we were, (We had been
there for 20 years piled into the sea bed) They then put transponders on
adjacent platforms so they had their own navigation system for pipe laying
etc.
