New Barns was Manchester Racecourse in 1896.

The map shows, as I stated originally, that the former Manchester racecourse
is now part of Salford Quays (it became the site of the No. 9 Dock).

Whilst it is correct to say that Castle Irwell was Manchester Racecourse
before New Barns, it is also true to say that New Barns was Manchester
Racecourse before Castle Irwell!
