Some years ago I read that the best way to reduce pollution was to run all
vehicles using heavy water engines which would be simple to build and would
produce only water as a byproduct. Of course to get the heavy water you need a
lot of new atomic power stations but as long as they were safe.

The other suggestion made was that as a start to reducing our energy needs
we (including councils) should all switch off any un-needed lights especially
the outside ones at night. By doing this we could reduce pollution - including
light pollution - and give the stars back to our children.

To see how we waste light one has only to moor out in the country on a
clear night and wander outside when it's dark. Moor at somewhere like Coole
Pilate, step out on a starry night and look around. Due to the pollution even
here the stars overhead are quite plentiful but by the time you're down to 30
degrees above the horizon the unseen background light pollution reduces the
numbers to just the few brightest. Meanwhile looking round you see the glow of
town lights and the glare of those powerful non security outside lights so
loved by many of those who now live in the country. In contrast the boats near
you will show little light - but then we are the good guys (and we run on
battery power).

                                                                   David Cragg

No, no they've thought of that. Took them a while, but apparently if we go
down that road we won't be able to grow enough food to feed the population.
Total bollocks of course, but like I say, much to Steve's amusement, it's
not about the pollution.

Thing in one of the papers recently - survey to find your carbon footprint.
You lost points if you weren't Vegetarian. They're not even trying to
pretend, these days.
