IIUIC (if I understand it correctly) anodes depend on correct electrical 
connection to the hull - so if they are welded on to give a good 
connection their physical position makes no difference. The only 
potential problem is that if they are exposed they are more liable to be 
knocked off. The other aspect is that the part of the circuit in the 
water only works over a certain distance so if you have a conventional 
rectangular-section hull it can be difficult to protect the centre 
section of the hull.

I think the most at-risk section of the hull is usually close to the 
propeller as the bronze is liable to erode the steel.
