The first time I saw this waterway back in the early eighties it was a
shallow weed-strewn ditch. Ten years later the waterway had been upgraded,
modernised beyond belief. Cruise up to a lock, insert your licence card &
paddles raise, gates open & boats move with minimal effort. It was a bit like
India going from *no* phones whatsoever to a mobile explosion, without
experiencing the landline era.
If you're new to Ballinamore make sure you visit McAllisters
Hotel for some great Beamish stout & "Reynolds" on a Thursday night for some
'diddly-daddly' music [traditional Irish accordion/fiddle/bodhran/penny
whistle/ defy you to keep your feet still stuff] Lovely part of the world,
lovely people--enjoy!
