As far as I remember (and it's 28 years since I was last in the Great Ouse) 
the distinctive thhing about the paddle gear there is not so much the size 
of the spindle but the fact that it is recessed in a casing, so you need a 
sort of long-nosed windlass that reaches inside the casing.

It might all be different now.
