We've pretty much given up on inviting friensd for a day's boating, as so often
they's arrive late, blissfully unaware that we can't easily make up lost time
(even if we wanted to!) or cut the trip short by turning round just anywhere.
The leisurely cruise becomes a stressful rush.

As for allowing them to bring their children. At least in my days as a trip
boat steerer I was paid to divide my attention between controlling the boat and
preventing kids from crushing their limbs or walking off lock sides. I derive
no pleasure from doing the same thing on my own boat while the parents abdicate
their own responsibility.

There! I feel better for getting that off my chest!

When my modern relatives came to call [...]

As the child's parents were in constant attention to her I don't think they
ever looked out the window - let alone came on deck. They had arrived late as
the Sat-Nav could not find the canal and once there, we were told by the
relative who had arranged the trip times for the day that they could only stay
3 hours as the child's parents had a firm's do that night and had to get back
early for that. So it was a quick out and back - all in a rush and nothing like
the quiet chug through Britain with the family that we expected.
