Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal! (I&M canal)

The Chicago and Saitary Ship Canal was built to REVERSE a rivers flow
so that sewage would flow into the Illniose river instead of lake michigan

The canal was completed in 1900 to preserve the water supply for the city of 
Chicago.   Drinking water for the city was (and still is) drawn from Lake 
Michigan which was being polluted by raw sewage.   What a great idea!   Reverse 
the flow of the river and send the sewage downstream to the Illinois, and 
ultimately Mississippi rivers.   I wonder what the good people downstream 
thought.   


I once cruised the Illinois River to the Mississippi River and then all the 
way to New Orleans.   All in a 26 foot cruiser.   Talk about feeling like a 
small fish in a big sea!   So that's what all that flotsam was...
