THE INLAND WATERWAYS PROTECTION
SOCIETY LTD
BARNSLEY CANAL
10.30 A.M. Saturday 31st March 2007 OS 111 375153
As this is a 6 mile walk we can meet at the later time of 10.30 a.m. and
still be back at the Squires Tea Room before it closes. There is ample
free safe parking at the Heronry and public toilets of better standard than
most!
The varied walk incorporates a section of the Trans Pennine Trail (which
spans the North of England from coast to coast), part of the Waterton
Trail and over two miles of the now disused Barnsley Canal with its
unusual pulley system for navigating sharp bends. We will also pass
Cold Hiendley and Wintersett Reservoirs which supplied the top level of
the canal as the canal company were not allowed to take water from the
River Dearne at Barnby.
This is a gentle walk with some stiles at the beginning and there is the
opportunity to cut the walk short at at least two places. For canal
enthusiasts who also like wildlife, binoculars would not go amiss. When
we devised this walk we heard and saw a woodpecker in action.
Now for the bad news there is no pub en route! However, we found a
lovely picnic spot overlooking one of the reservoirs and hopefully the rest
of the day will more than compensate!
This walk does not need a car shuffle. Mars bars can be purchased at
the Visitor Centre.
As always come prepared for inclement weather good strong boots are
recommended.
Everybody is welcome on an IWPS Walk. On recent walks we have
been pleased to welcome some newcomers.
The Meeting Venue is
The Waterton Countryside Discovery Centre,
Anglers Country Park,
Haw Park Lane, Wintersett,
Wakefield WF4 2EB
Wintersett is just off the A638 Doncaster to Wakefield Road. Leave the
A638 South at Foulby on to the B6273 and then on to a minor road to
the Anglers Country Park.
If you intend to walk please advise me, Barbara Walker, the previous
evening (Friday 30th March 2007) of your intention before 10 p.m. on
