Interesting. My wife flies a 39-year-old Piper Cherokee
(made in the U S of A) and the altimeter is calibrated
in millibars. Of course, they could have fitted millibar
altimeters, knowing the aircraft was destined to fly 
in the UK (and abroad - it's been all over Europe and
Ireland and recently to Morocco). 
ISTR some gauge or other measures "suction" and is in 
inches of mercury.
My boat's oil pressure gauge (the only instrument it has)
is calibrated in "bar".
