Yea, to you and me - but these guys are all professors who don't think like
that. You could also say if he was wider than the hole as that direction is not
effected he couldn't get down anyway. I must admit my favourite idea was the if
he just went down enough to trip over the far edge - just imagine the traffic
accident!
