I, too have been set adrift only once.  At Ware.  The villain cut the
rope, but it must have taken him ages as the rope was ancient,
sun-cured, and extremely hard.  I'm amazed his efforts didn't wake me.

OTOH, I was once eating dinner with six others in a narrow boat at
Dudley when a little darling through a brick through a (bedroom)
window, and let go one rope before we boiled out after him (he got
away in the darkness).  

It happens.  If you are concerned, use a chain and padlock to
something permanent on the bank.
