Take a look at
<http://www.maib.gov.uk/cms_resources/dft_masafety_027351.pdf> and
<http://www.maib.gov.uk/cms_resources/Swan_.pdf> for a couple of
accident reports where a lack of stability was the primary cause of the
accident.  In the case of Swan the addition of steel canopy on a light
boat led to it becoming "tender", and the ballast that was added
subsequently led to a reduction in freeboard.
