Speaking of gunwales, inside we, being tall, had all our kitchen surfaces
raised so as not to leave a gap twixt them and gunwale. This gets us to bend
less but does not reduce cupboard space under the surfaces and the gunwales.
While about it we had all the internal beds and seating raised the odd couple
of inches or so - which means they are easier to get up out of than the ones at
home (and have more room under). Of course this suits us but might not suit a
person who could comfortably fit in a bed across the boat - while we (for
comfort) had to have an extended one length-wise.

* Question: Assuming that a 70 footer really will work and I'm not going
to
sink it catching the stern on the cill on the first tight lock (is it a
cill, yes?) then can I build it 2 inches wider right up to 7 feet? I say
this because if it's going to be big, I might as well live the life of a
squeezed pencil..?

For maximum inside space have the deck/gunwale as high as possible, not a
low slung tug style. My boat has 5" gunwales and this does also narrow the
boat above gunwale level, a 4" gunwale would give you 2" extra space. If
its only 3" and not pre formed with a radius and a D section band welded
round as a rubbing strake its the same width as a 4" preformed with an
extra 2" inside. so basically a 5" preformed gunwale like mine gives you
4" less space than a 3" welded one with only 1" less space to walk on.
The width at floor level is not so important as its very difficult to use
it all anyway due to the slope of the hull sides and the tumblehome on the
cabin side. As for cilling it, just keep your bow fender against the
bottom gate,. Fenders are cheap.
