I know this thread has gone quiet lately, but I have just found my copy of 
'Straight from the Tunnel's Mouth' - songs of the Inland Waterways, by the 
Boatmen. On the sleeve notes for one song it says "Several 19th 
centurywriters refer to the boatman's habit of enlivening the passage of 
long tunnels by singing sad ballads". So it is not a new idea!
