At one lock on the 9 we opened the bottom paddles on one lock but didn't  
notice a boat leaving the lock below it. That boat was swept  across/onto the 
top 
of the by-weir where it was jammed by the pressure of  water. With a 
combination of opening and closing the right paddles and  using ropes we 
finally 
managed to get it off the weir.
 
It wasn't dangerous but the quiet way the other boater didn't say how he  
felt about it made the whole episode very embarrassing.  ;-)
 
So before opening the paddles check the next lock to see if you are likely  
to cause (or get) problems by operating the lock!
