AIUI (and I claim no expertise in this, but merely report the talk on 
the towpath) there are only a few tidal windows between now and late 
August for that passage, so it's a risky option in the sense of being 
left many days cruising from Stanground Lock and the Middle Level route 
if it goes wrong and the pilots advise against it for some reason.

Also, the bottle neck is likely to be on the return, assuming those who 
do make the transit then wish to go back via Salter's Lode. Time will 
be tight if you don't want to get stuck on a Nene inflamed by autumn 
storms.

Hence my advice to get booked up in good time - I'm still not convinced 
that there are enough slots for all the potential takers.
