If you do it correctly you wouldn't have to.
Uphill
On GU locks open the ground paddle on the same side as the steel boat this 
holds the boat against the wall.
Do not open the opposite ground paddle.
If you want to use the gate paddles open the opposite gate paddle to the 
ground paddle that is open.
If you open either of the other two paddle you will push the heavier boat 
onto the lighter one.
