I use the Vodafone Mobile Connect Lite widget. That's a little box that
plugs into a USB2 socket and provides wireless access similar to a mobile
phone. The current model can pick up any if three Vodafone networks
depending on what's floating around in your local bit of the aether. It
doesn;t give true broadband speeds, but is the best aproximation I've come
across.

If it can get it, it tunes to the new up-grade 3GPlus network. The widget
is capable of receivint his at 3.6 Mbps, although I'm told that at the
moment the network can only deliver about half that. But this netwrok is
fairly new and I'm not sure how widely it's diseminated.

If that network's not available it will pick up the ordinary 3G network
which somewhat slower.

Failing either of this, it will try to connect to the GPRS network, which is
slow by comparison with the others.

Of course, there are some places (often quite local - in a cutting of the
shadow of a building) where it can't find any of the signals.
