Day 21 Thursday 26 July 2007
Evesham to Stratford
11:34 to 19:38

We didn't leave until late today to give them more chance to sort out
the Evesham lock. When we arrived at the lock the dredger was in the
chamber, and the tug was ready on the moorings below. The narrowboat
on the bottom gate beam was moved off, and the bottom paddle working
again. They locked the tug through next, and then we took our boat
through. They were going to go up the river with the work boat to sort
out problems with a lock further up.

We left in front of the dredger, and arrived at the next lock at
1:34pm. We stopped above it for lunch, and just about 2:05pm the
dredger arrived after some serious noise, we heard them coming for
over quarter of an hour!

We had a good, but slow at times run up the river. At Billington lock
we had trouble shutting the top gate – it was silted up, but with some
lock flushing we got the gates closed enough. We heard about a sunk
narrowboat further up the river near a lock, but it was just on the
bottom lock moorings at Cadbury Lock. It was a slow run to that lock
as the river is very narrow, and the main channel winds back and forth
through the main river cut.

We had heard from someone that a tree was blocking the bridge at
Welford. When we arrived, we could see that a tree some minor distance
from the bridge had fallen blocking the direct way to bridge, we went
around the tree, but as the bow entered the main flow through the
bridge hole I could not get the back around quick enough and the bow
went flying towards the bridge. It glanced off, it sounded worse than
it was as nothing moved inside.

The next "problem" was a tree across a lock at Stratford. Again this
was an exaggeration, and we squeezed by the trees (one above, and one
below the lock). When we reached Barge Lock the gates were open, and
so could go straight in. It wasn't long before we were moored up,
although again there was a tree in the view of "Sky", and so we turned
the boat around.

The boat in the bridge has been moved, and so tomorrow after doing
some shopping we will be heading north.
