Day 8 - 25 August 2007 St Ives We had a walk around the muddy site to get our bearings. Later two of our friends from Bethels Bridge Boat Club joined us for the weekend, Gary and Jennie. Mum also came down – also called Jennie. Dad and the rest went out for the evening, but I decided to stay at home as I was tired from a late night on Friday.
Day 9 – 26 August 2007 St Ives - Huntingdon - St Ives We decided to give Gary and Jennie a run up the river, and so decided to go to Huntingdon. It was late in the afternoon – 3pm – when we left after looking around the rally site. The next lock was busy with boats, and we had to wait until our turn. It was slow going through Houghton lock as well. A long parade of on-lookers lined the footpath across the tail of the lock and around the side. We reached Huntingdon at 5pm, and moored up to have a quick look around. There is no such thing as quick with Dad, and it was 6pm when we left the mooring. We wanted to go out for tea, and stopped at Hartford Marina. The moorings were full of poorly moored plastic boats, with one little just arrived as we did filling the only space we could squeeze in. We asked them to move, and over hung the corner to fit in. The queues were long for ordering at the bar, and we were told it would be 1 hour for the food to arrive. We nearly didn't bother, but were hungry so stayed. It took about 25 minutes to order the food, but thankfully it was only 30 minutes that it arrived. I had Chicken Tikka Masala, which was OK, but not brilliant. Everyone else enjoyed their meal, and at 8pm we made our way back to our mooring at St Ives. Houghton Lock was ready for us, and persuaded a reluctant Gary to steer the boat through the top guillotine gate. We were not so lucky with the other lock, and after trying to fill it with the paddles up on the bottom gates, Dad realised that it would be better with them shut. It was another guillotine lock, and so would have still filled if it liked it or not! When we arrived at the top of the moored boats for the rally we realised that the illuminated boat procession was in progress. We followed the boats down the river, and got many comments about our 'illuminations'. We moored on 1D again, and managed to see most of the boats we had missed earlier. Two moored up behind us – one was Kew. We stayed in that night as we were all knackered! -- Michael Askin http://shoestring_DOT_zapto_DOT_org/ Yahoo!
