When I was driving a fire engine down the high street @ a fair rate of knots I
found it most disconcerting to read on a panel in the cab that "This vehicle
has a height of 3,300 mm" when approaching a bridge that was 10' 9'' high!
Suffice it to say that it made for even more excitement!!!
I received a thirty-minute metrication lecture in 1979 & nothing more.
When sending a message back to control & giving dimensions of a building
involved in a fire e.g. "Building of two floors, 8 yards by 4 yards" it's
amazing how suddenly the building[s] became [again e.g.] 8 metres by 4 metres
quite seamlessly! :-))
