That somewhat overused word most definitely applies to Mike Stevens.
Although for years we moored more or less round the corner from him
(we at Iver, he at Uxbridge) and often passed Felis Catus I never met
Mike.
Although we occasionally crossed swords during the time that I was a
regular contributor to uk.rec.waterways I had nothing but admiration
for his profound knowledge of the canals as well as his untiring
efforts to promote and protect them.
By a strange coincidence he and I both began our boating careers in
the same year, 1972. Whilst I was fortunate to be able to enjoy ten
very happy years as a residential boater it is sad to note that Mike
was only able to enjoy fulltime boating for such a short period.
Mary and I can only add our own condolences to the many already sent
to Wendy.
