I've just picked up my 2500 emails that have accumulated over our two week trip and was shocked and saddened to hear about Mike. I've worked with him on the newsletter for the last three Nationals, and been on many a quiz team at the boater's quizzes which he both organised and took part in. The last thing he said to me was 'see you next year at Autherley!' I will remember him for his knowledge, his kindness and his unfailing good humour, even in the face of Mud, Floods and Bloody-minded Electricity supplies! The world will be a poorer place without him and I feel that there is now a large Mike-shaped hole in the waterways community which will be difficult to fill. I intend to try and get to Newcastle-under-Lyme on monday for the funeral and will probably drive up on the sunday and stay with Jez in Nottingham (which is a mite nearer than Southampton!) so if anyone wants a lift to or from Southampton or Nottingham, drop me an email.
