As the OP, can I thank everyone for their contributions so far. I'm sorry for not responding earlier (pressures of work 'n' all that) but I've been reading the posts from my Blackberry (which isn't set up to post to the list).
The whole winding thing is one of the things we tend to take for granted, but in connecting people to the canals, many for whom a trip on one of our trip boats may be the first time they've ever been on the canal, how to turn around is not something they generally consider.
