November's walk will be a morning walk of approximately 4 miles from Trent
Lock on the Erewash Canal along the River Trent to Shardlow for lunch. In
theafternoon we have a tour of the historic canal port with a local guide
followed by a visit to the Heritage Museum which will include a warming cuppa.

The Walk:
We will meet in Wilne Lane (free) public car park at Shardlow (SK 445305) for
a 10am departure in a minimum of cars to Trent Lock where there is another
free public car park (which has toilet facilities - hopefully open, they
generally
are). We will then follow the north bank of the Trent eastwards to Sawley Lock
where we cross the river on the footbridge adjacent to the Midland railway
line,
inspect the twinned locks before following the half mile canal section past
Sawley Marina back onto the river section to Derwentmouth. Unfortunately
since BW demolished Long Horse Bridge a few years ago we cannot carry on
up the Trent and Mersey Canal so we will follow the Trent to the official limit
of
navigation at Cavendish Bridge which gives us the opportunity to glimpse the
old industrial buildings there. The short walk from there back to Shardlow is
on
a footpath alongside the former A6.

Lunchtime Arrangements
There are several hostelries (including Real Ale Drinker Approved ones!)
where food can be purchased and opportunities for picnics in the vicinity.

Afternoon:
After lunch Sheila Cook will guide us around the canal port and give us access
to the canalside Heritage Centre. The tour and museum will cost the princely
sum of £3 per head including tea and bikkies - there will also be items for
sale
at the Heritage Centre so bring your wallets!

Important - Booking!
It would be helpful to know approximate numbers for the tour as two guides
may be required if there are a lot of us. Please let Dave and Izzie know if you
are coming, either by email iturner (at) totalise.co.uk or by phone (01636
708781) by Friday 23rd November at the latest.
