                          HALTON WATERWAYS
(Bridgewater Canal, Runcorn & Latchford Canal,
Manchester Ship Canal and River Mersey.)

10.30am Saturday 5th April 2008

Today's walk starts in East Runcorn from where we will walk along the towpath
of the Bridgewater Canal to Moore and then along the dry bed of the former
Runcorn & Latchford Canal, to join the towpath of the Manchester Ship Canal
and the southern shore of the River Mersey as far as Wigg lsland and Old
Quay Bridge. The distance is 7½ miles.

The group will meet at the car park (free) for Runcorn East Station (Grid
Reference SJ558814) at 10.30 a.m. From here we join the towpath of the
Bridgewater Canal and walk to Moore, where lunch will be taken at The Red
Lion. There is a village shop in Moore that sells Mars bars and snacks. After
lunch the return walk from Moore will be along the dry bed of the former
Runcorn & Latchford Canal, through Moore Country Park, to join the towpath of
the Manchester Ship Canal. Then following the M.S.C. towpath and the
southern shore of the River Mersey as far as Wigg lsland and the Old Quay
Bridge. From here we will travel back to Runcorn East Station by service bus.
(Anyone entitled to senior citizen concessions should remember to bring their
bus pass)

As always, stout shoes or boots and waterproofs are recommended.

Please inform me either by e.mail during that week at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or ring me on Friday evening, 4th April, between
6 p.m. and 8 p.m., telephone number 01565 654342. You can leave a
message on the answer phone if I am not available. I look forward to seeing
you.

Please note that the town of Runcorn has two railway stations, one is named
Runcorn and the other Runcorn East Station, the latter is the one where we
will meet. The route to Runcorn East is through part of Runcorn New Town,
which as is normal for a new town, has more than it's fair share of traffic
roundabouts.

Gerald Leach .

Next time out: 7th June 2008 - Cromford Canal with standard and narrow
                           gauge railways.
