I've eaten zander in France and it was a very acceptable taste and
  texture, IMO.

I would agree - I've eaten it in Finland. I'm not quite sure why the 
cull is going on - zander is a perfectly acceptable part of the 
ecosystem in continental Europe. Freshwater ecosystems tend to be very 
'patchy' as it's difficult for species to get from one river to another.

Now if they introduced wels to the canals -apparently wels eat dogs and 
ducks so may be a solution to the fouling problem...
