Only had it for 5 days but initial tests are positive (after some
tinkering.) I'm still living on land but moving afloat again very
shortly so wanted to get it sorted in advance.
First problem was that there is no Vodafone 3G signal anywhere in the
house and their GPRS seems horribly slow compared to the Orange GPRS
that I had last used on board 15 months ago. Second was that the
software bundled on the device hits a pre-programmed limit after 50Mb of
data then disconnects. Not much use as I'm a heavy data user. I swapped
to the CD version of the software which allowed me to carry on though I
didn't get up to the second 50Mb on that software so the same have may
occur as its counter did not know about the data I had previously used.
I was in Stratford last night and took it with me to do another test.
The Vodafone 3G there was achieving decent broadband speeds, I didn't
make a note of the numbers but distinctly remember that the upstream
speed was a touch better than my broadband at home.
I was able to look on the Huawei website and download some useful
software: I have flashed the firmware in the device (model E220) and
removed the Vodafone proprietary software on both the device and my
laptop. This has allowed me to test the setup with an Orange SIM card
(they are not simlocked but won't connect to Orange using the Vodafone
software.) Performance on that was as good as Vodafone in Stratford as I
have Orange 3G at home.
Long term I'll use Vodafone as my main data carrier put keep an Orange
PAYG SIM to hand for blackspots and take up the £1/day deal as required.
Incidentally, I've taken an unlimited data tariff costing £25/month. The
shop staff suggested that I used over 5Gb/month regularly they may want
to chat but I won't be surcharged. Not sure that I'll "regularly" reach
that limit but we'll see as I do a fair bit of IT support.
HTH
