Take it slowly.

Plan what you are going to do.

Accept help but don't expect it.

Consider whether it might be easier to pull your boat into or out of
the lock.  It might be easier than climbing a ladder.

If there is a safe option and one that is less safe, choose the former
 -  there is nobody there to rescue you.

In a flight and with no other boats around, consider working two or
three locks at the same time.  You can be emptying a second, and
perhaps a third, lock whilst your boat is rising in the first.  Try to
have the gates of the next lock open before you exit a lock, so as to
avoid having to tie-up in the intervening pound.


There is no reason why single-handing through locks need be that much
slower than doing the same thing with a small crew.  I once
single-handed from the south end of the Harecastle Tunnel to the Big
Lock at Middlewich.  10:00 a.m. through the tunnel and I still managed
to reach Middlewich with time and energy to get a meal in the pub.
