I often see boats moored above Sandiacre lock but the only place I have
spent the night is in Langley Mill basin where the Gt Northern is handy
right alongside (do they have Sky??), and there is a community of
liveaboards there.
There are other more rural spots along the way where spending a night
should be a fair bet. I've done it single handed from Trent lock to
Langley Mill taking from lunchtime until mid evening.
