I do recall being told in the late 70s that the convention was that exit gates were always left open south of Berkhamsted but closed north of there. I've no recollection of what the basis was for this, or even who it was that told me.
Having just done most of the GU south from Braunston (now in Uxbridge) I'd have to say that still seems to apply, though the demarcation has probably moved south a bit. Kind of ironic that BW are now asking us to open gates because of leaks when they used to want us to close them Wish they'd make their mind up but whatever the reason as a single hander I'm all for it.
